The basic idea of implementing the Gastronomy Award is the promotion and cooperation of the Wadden Sea region
- free from national frontiers - defined as neighbours of the Wadden Sea on a 25 km wide coastal strip.
The Award was brought to life on an international tourism workshop of the “InterRegional Wadden Sea
Cooperation (IRWC)” between the association “Ostfriesland schmeckt nach Meer” (Germany) and the “Stichting
Waddengroup” (Netherlands).
It concerns the participating gastronomy as well as the used regional products. The participants of the contest are
from Denmark, The Netherlands, Schleswig-Holstein and Ostfriesland in Germany.
The first International Gastronomy Award of the Wadden Sea region (IGAW) was held on the 12-13 November 2003
in Leeuwarden, The Netherlands. The event was organized and financed among others by the "Stichting Waddengroup"
and the "InterRegional Waddensea Cooperation" (IRWC).
The second Award took place on 16 March 2005 in Wittmund. The forthcoming International Gastronomy Award
is going to be implemented in 2010 in Denmark.
Another aim is to introdce the regional products and the higher quality regional cuisine in the public so that there is
another element and touristic sight/event for the Wadden Sea region.
Along with the contest, the organizers are looking for a maximum possible interest in general public to gain permanent
attention as well as economic promotion especially for the regional brands.
